Adult screening index. Not adjusted for age, sex, pregnancy, or muscle. Not a diagnosis.

How this is calculated

How it works
  1. Step 1

    Height and weight

Centimetres and kilograms. Nothing is converted from feet or pounds.

  2. Step 2

    The index

Weight divided by height in metres, squared.

  3. Step 3

    A band

The WHO adult category. It is a screen, not a diagnosis.

Body mass index

BMI = kg ÷ (cm ÷ 100)²

What the symbols mean
kgWeight in kilograms.
cmHeight in centimetres, converted to metres before squaring.

WHO adult cutoffs used here: under 18.5 underweight, 18.5 to 24.9 normal range, 25 to 29.9 overweight, 30 or above obese.

The normal-range weights shown beside the result are 18.5 and 24.9 multiplied by your height in metres squared. They describe the band, not a target a clinician has set.

Children, teenagers, pregnancy, and a high muscle mass all sit poorly on these adult bands. The age calculator will not correct for that.

Questions

Which formula and units?

Kilograms divided by metres squared. You enter centimetres; the tool divides by 100. It does not accept feet, inches, or pounds.

Where do the categories come from?

The WHO adult cutoffs: below 18.5, 18.5 to 24.9, 25 to 29.9, and 30 or above. They were built for population screening.

Who should not treat this as a verdict?

Anyone under 18, anyone pregnant, and people whose weight is high because of muscle. The number does not know any of that. It is not medical advice.

What is the normal-weight range for this height?

The result includes it: 18.5 times height in metres squared, through 24.9 times the same. Changing height changes that range. Changing weight does not.
