India's GST changed on 22 September 2025. The 12% and 28% slabs went, and most goods and services now fall into a 5% merit rate or an 18% standard rate. A 40% rate applies to a short list of luxury and sin items, such as larger cars and sugary aerated drinks, and many basic foods are at 0%. When a sale happens inside one state, the GST is split equally between central tax (CGST) and state tax (SGST). Between states it is one integrated tax (IGST) at the full rate.
In the UK, standard VAT is 20%, with a 5% reduced rate on things like home energy. Germany charges 19%, or 7% on most food and books. US sales tax is set by each state and city and is added at the till. A shelf price in the US normally excludes tax, while prices in India, the UK and the EU include it.
The mistake to avoid when removing tax is taking the rate off the total. Divide by one plus the rate instead. For a discounted item, tax is charged on the price after a discount shown on the invoice, so work out the discount first with the discount calculator. To share a bill that includes tax, use the bill splitter. For how much a price changed, try percentage change.
