Sex

Units

cm

Ideal weight (Devine)

65.9 kg

Healthy BMI range for this height: 53.5 kg to 72 kg.

Robinson
65.2 kg
Miller
66 kg
Hamwi
66.7 kg
BMI 18.5–24.9
53.5 kg–72 kg

How we got this

  1. 170 cm = 66.9 in, 6.9 in over 5 ft
  2. Devine: 50 + 2.3 × 6.9 = 65.9 kg

A range, not a number

The four formulas usually land within 5 kg of each other. Read them alongside the healthy BMI band and, if you train, your body fat.

What this calculator does not account for

  • Frame size, muscle and age.
  • Heights under 5 ft, where the formulas were never tested.
  • Children and pregnancy. It is a dosing formula, not a health target.

How this is calculated

Formula: Devine (1974)

IBW =50 kg (men) or 45.5 kg (women) + 2.3 kg × inches over 5 ft

What the symbols mean

  • inches over 5 ftHeight in inches minus 60. Shorter heights use 0.

Good to know

  • Robinson, Miller and Hamwi change the base and the kilograms per inch.
  • The BMI band is 18.5 to 24.9 times height in metres squared.

Worked examples

Each example is worked out by the same code as the calculator above.

Man, 5 ft 10 in (177.8 cm)

10 in over 5 ft. Devine: 50 + 2.3 × 10 = 73 kg. Healthy BMI band: 58.5–78.7 kg.

Woman, 5 ft 4 in (162.56 cm)

4 in over 5 ft. Devine: 45.5 + 2.3 × 4 = 54.7 kg; Robinson gives 55.8 kg.

Questions

Which formula is right?

None is exact. Devine is the one hospitals use for dosing. The spread across all four shows how rough the idea of one ideal weight is.

What if I am under 5 feet?

The formulas were not built for it; the page uses the 5 ft value. Rely on the BMI range instead.

Does it work for children?

No. Children need growth charts for their age and sex.
