Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY) is a small-savings scheme for a girl child. A parent or guardian can open it at a post office or authorised bank before she turns 10. Each girl can have only one account, and a family can usually have two, or three when twins or triplets are born. Deposits run from ₹250 to ₹1,50,000 a financial year for the first 15 years. The account then keeps earning until it matures 21 years after it was opened.
The rate is set every quarter. It is 8.2% for October to December 2026, the same as every quarter since January 2024. The tool keeps that rate for all 21 years. If the rate falls, the real maturity will be lower, so treat the result as a projection. Interest is credited once a year. As with PPF, a deposit made early in the financial year earns more than one made in March.
From age 18, or after she passes Class 10 if that is earlier, up to 50% of the previous year's balance can be withdrawn for education. The account can also be closed early for her marriage after 18. In the old regime, deposits count towards the 80C limit, which is shared with PPF and ELSS. To compare SSY with an equity plan, see the SIP calculator, and test the effect of rising costs with the inflation calculator.
