Degrees Celsius to degrees Fahrenheit

1 degree Celsius = 33.8 degrees Fahrenheit

Type a value in degrees Celsius (°C) to get degrees Fahrenheit (°F) straight away. Both units belong to temperature, measured here against the kelvin.

1 °C = 33.8 °F

Formula

°F = °C × 9/5 + 32

Multiply by 9/5 (1.8) because a Fahrenheit degree is smaller, then add 32 because water freezes at 32 °F. Here °C is the value in degrees Celsius and °F is the result in degrees Fahrenheit.

Worked example: 37 degrees Celsius: put 37 into °F = °C × 9/5 + 32. The result is 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit.

Quick estimate in your head

Double the °C and add 30. At 20 °C that gives 70 °F against an exact 68 °F; the error grows away from 10 °C.

Watch out for

  • Do not add 32 when converting a temperature difference; use only the 9/5 factor.
  • For a temperature change (not a reading), use only the 1.8 factor: a rise of 10 °C is a rise of 18 °F, not 50 °F.

About the units

Degree Celsius (°C). Water freezes at 0 °C and boils at 100 °C at sea level. Used for weather almost everywhere.

Degree Fahrenheit (°F). Water freezes at 32 °F and boils at 212 °F. Used for weather and cooking in the US.

Going the other way, 1 degree Fahrenheit is -17.2222 degrees Celsius.
