Degrees Fahrenheit to degrees Celsius

1 degree Fahrenheit = -17.2222 degrees Celsius

Type a value in degrees Fahrenheit (°F) to get degrees Celsius (°C) straight away. Both units belong to temperature, measured here against the kelvin.

1 °F = -17.222222 °C

Formula

°C = (°F − 32) × 5/9

Subtract 32 to move the freezing point to zero, then multiply by 5/9 because a Celsius degree is 1.8 times larger. Here °F is the value in degrees Fahrenheit and °C is the result in degrees Celsius.

Worked example: 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit: put 98.6 into °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9. The result is 37 degrees Celsius.

Quick estimate in your head

Subtract 30 and halve. At 68 °F that gives 19 °C against an exact 20 °C; the error grows away from 50 °F.

Watch out for

  • For a temperature change (not a reading), use only the 1.8 factor: a rise of 10 °C is a rise of 18 °F, not 50 °F.
  • Do not add 32 when converting a temperature difference; use only the 9/5 factor.

About the units

Degree Fahrenheit (°F). Water freezes at 32 °F and boils at 212 °F. Used for weather and cooking in the US.

Degree Celsius (°C). Water freezes at 0 °C and boils at 100 °C at sea level. Used for weather almost everywhere.

Going the other way, 1 degree Celsius is 33.8 degrees Fahrenheit.
