The units
- bit (bit)
- A single binary digit. Network speeds are quoted in bits per second, so Mbps is megabits.
- byte (B)
- 8 bits. The basic unit for file and memory sizes.
- kilobyte (kB)
- 1,000 bytes in the SI (decimal) system that drive makers and macOS use.
- megabyte (MB)
- 1,000,000 bytes (decimal). Windows shows MiB values but labels them MB.
- gigabyte (GB)
- 1,000,000,000 bytes (decimal). Phone storage and data plans are sold in GB.
- terabyte (TB)
- 10¹² bytes (decimal). Hard drives are sold in TB, which is why a 1 TB drive shows about 931 GiB.
- mebibyte (MiB)
- 2²⁰ = 1,048,576 bytes. The binary unit behind most memory and OS file sizes.
- gibibyte (GiB)
- 2³⁰ bytes, about 7.4% more than a GB. RAM is sized in GiB.
