Terabytes to gigabytes

1 terabyte = 1,000 gigabytes

Type a value in terabytes (TB) to get gigabytes (GB) straight away. A terabyte is larger than a gigabyte, so the number goes up. Both units belong to data storage, measured here against the byte.

1 TB = 1,000 GB

Formula

GB = TB × 1,000

One terabyte is 1,000 gigabytes, so multiply the terabyte value by that factor. Here TB is the value in terabytes and GB is the result in gigabytes.

Worked example: 2 terabytes × 1,000 = 2,000 gigabytes.

Quick estimate in your head

Multiply by 10^3: move the decimal point 3 places right (add 3 zeros).

Watch out for

  • A 1 TB drive shows as about 931 GB (really GiB) in Windows. Nothing is missing; the units differ.
  • Drive makers use decimal GB (10⁹ bytes), while Windows reports binary GiB but labels it GB. A 256 GB drive shows about 238 'GB'.

About the units

Terabyte (TB). 10¹² bytes (decimal). Hard drives are sold in TB, which is why a 1 TB drive shows about 931 GiB.

Gigabyte (GB). 1,000,000,000 bytes (decimal). Phone storage and data plans are sold in GB.

Going the other way, 1 gigabyte is 0.001 terabytes.

Questions

How many gigabytes are in 1 terabyte?

1 terabyte is 1,000 gigabytes, and 1 gigabyte is 0.001 terabytes.

How do I convert terabytes to gigabytes?

Use GB = TB × 1,000. For example, 2 terabytes × 1,000 = 2,000 gigabytes.

Why does my drive show less space than advertised?

Makers use decimal units (1 GB = 10⁹ bytes) while many operating systems count in binary (1 GiB = 2³⁰ bytes). A 1 TB drive therefore shows about 931 GiB.

How much is a data-centre HDD in gigabytes?

20 TB is 20,000 GB.
