Marks percentage calculator

The percentage is the total marks divided by the total possible marks. The bands follow the common university pattern (First class from 60%, distinction from 75%), but your board or university may set its own.

Enter the subject 6 marks.

Working out your percentage from marks

Percentage is the part you scored out of the whole. Add up your marks, add up the marks you could have got, divide, and multiply by 100. The trouble is only in keeping the two totals consistent.

Say you scored 78, 82, 91, 67 and 74 in five subjects of 100 each. The total is 392 out of 500, which is 78.4%. The average per subject is also 78.4, which only works out the same because every subject has the same maximum.

When maximums differ, use the totals, not an average of percentages. A 40 out of 50 and a 70 out of 100 give 110 out of 150, which is 73.3%. Averaging 80% and 70% would wrongly give 75%.

Class bands are set by the board. Many universities use 75% for distinction, 60% for first class and 50% for second class, with 35% to 40% as the pass mark. Check your own marksheet, since a few use 45% or 55% as cut-offs.

Questions

How do I calculate percentage from marks?

Divide the total you scored by the total possible and multiply by 100.

What if subjects have different maximum marks?

Add the actual maximums to get the denominator, then divide. This tool assumes the same maximum for each subject.

What is a first class percentage?

Many universities treat 60% and above as first class and 75% or more as distinction, but each sets its own.

Is it the same as CGPA?

No. CGPA is on a 10-point scale and the conversion to percentage depends on the board or university.
