Cups to grams calculator

 —

One US cup is about 240 ml, spooned and levelled for flour. Weights are typical values from a baking weight chart; packed or sifted ingredients weigh a little different.

Why bakers weigh instead of using cups

American recipes use cups and many others use grams. The trouble is that a cup is a measure of volume, and different ingredients weigh very different amounts for the same volume. A cup of honey weighs four times as much as a cup of cocoa powder.

Two cups of all-purpose flour is about 240 g, because one cup weighs about 120 g. Two cups of granulated sugar is about 396 g, and two cups of butter is 454 g. The chart under the result shows the common sizes, from 1/4 cup up to 2 cups, for the ingredient you pick.

Flour causes the most trouble. If you dip the cup into the bag, the flour packs down and you can end up with 140 or 150 g. That is enough to make a cake dry. Spoon the flour into the cup and level it with a knife, or simply weigh it.

These weights are averages for typical products. Brands, humidity and how finely something is ground all change the number a little. For bread and cakes, a cheap kitchen scale is the single best way to get the same result every time.

What this calculator does not account for

  • Weights are averages; brands and packing vary.
  • Assumes spooned and levelled US cups.

How this is calculated

Formula: Volume to weight

grams =cups × grams per cup for that ingredient

What the symbols mean

  • cupsTablespoons ÷ 16 or teaspoons ÷ 48.
  • grams per cupThe ingredient's weight for one level US cup, from a baking weight chart.

Good to know

  • Flour is spooned into the cup and levelled. Scooping straight from the bag packs it and can add 20 to 30 g a cup.

Questions

How many grams is 1 cup of flour?

About 120 g of all-purpose flour, spooned and levelled. Scooped flour can weigh 140 g or more.

How many grams is 1 cup of sugar?

About 198 g of granulated sugar. Packed brown sugar is about 213 g and powdered sugar about 113 g.

How many grams is 1 cup of butter?

About 227 g, which is two US sticks of butter.
