What studying abroad really costs, in rupees
The cost of a degree abroad has three parts: tuition, living costs, and one-time costs such as flights, visa fees and a rent deposit. Tuition and living are charged in the local currency, so the rupee figure moves with the exchange rate. This calculator uses today's rate.
Here is the sum for a 2-year master's in the USA with typical figures. Tuition is $30,000 and living $15,000 a year, so $45,000. At ₹94.64 to the dollar that is about ₹42.6 lakh a year. Two years is ₹85.2 lakh, and with ₹1.5 lakh of one-time costs the total is about ₹86.7 lakh.
Living costs here are each country's student visa funds rule where one exists: £1,171 a month outside London for the UK, CAD 23,448 a year for Canada, AUD 29,710 for Australia, €11,904 a year in a German blocked account and NZD 20,000 for New Zealand. Those are minimums. London, New York or Sydney cost more.
To cut the cost, look at Germany's tuition-free public universities, one-year master's courses in the UK and Ireland, assistantships in the USA, and part-time work, which most student visas allow for about 20 hours a week in term time. How much does an MS in the USA cost in rupees?
With typical figures, about ₹43 lakh a year for tuition and living, or about ₹87 lakh for a 2-year course including flights and visa. Private universities and big cities can cost much more.
Which country is cheapest for Indian students?
Germany, because public universities charge only a semester fee. You still need about €11,904 a year in a blocked account for living costs, around ₹13 lakh.
Why use the visa funds figure for living costs?
It is the minimum each government says a student needs, so it is a fair floor. Big cities such as London, New York, Sydney or Toronto cost more.
