Each draw is random and every combination is equally likely. Odds are for one line; more lines raise your chance in proportion. Prize amounts, shared jackpots and special add-ons such as Power Play are not included.

How unlikely a jackpot really is

Lottery odds come from counting combinations. In Powerball you choose 5 numbers from 69, which can be done in 11,238,513 ways, and 1 Powerball from 26. Multiply them and there are 292,201,338 possible tickets. Only one wins the jackpot.

Other games are built the same way. Mega Millions picks 5 from 70 and 1 from 24, so 1 in 290,472,336. EuroMillions picks 5 from 50 and 2 from 12, so 1 in 139,838,160. UK Lotto picks 6 from 59, so 1 in 45,057,474.

Big numbers are hard to picture. With one Powerball line a draw, you would need about 200 million draws for a 50% chance of one jackpot. At two draws a week, that is close to two million years.

Smaller prizes are much more likely, which the table shows tier by tier. Those odds are why lotteries can pay out lots of small wins and still keep most of the money. Play for fun with money you can afford to lose.

How this is calculated

Formula: Lottery odds

combinations =C(n, k) × C(m, b), where C(n, k) =n! ÷ (k! × (n − k)!)

What the symbols mean

  • n, kMain numbers in the pool, and how many you pick.
  • m, bBonus-ball pool, and how many bonus balls you pick.
  • C(n, k)The number of ways to choose k numbers from n.

Good to know

  • Odds for partial matches use the hypergeometric formula: ways to match i of your numbers times ways to miss the rest.

Questions

What are the odds of winning Mega Millions?

1 in 290,472,336 under the rules from April 2025: 5 from 70 and 1 Mega Ball from 24.

What are the odds of winning EuroMillions?

1 in 139,838,160: 5 from 50 and 2 Lucky Stars from 12.

Does buying more tickets help?
