Notice period calculator

 —

The notice runs from the date you hand in your resignation. Choose whether that day counts as day 1, because contracts differ. Working-day notice skips Saturdays and Sundays; public holidays are not taken out.

How notice periods are counted

Your notice period is the time between handing in your resignation and your final day at work. Contracts usually set it in days or months, such as 30 days, 60 days, 90 days, two weeks or one month. The tricky part is where the count starts.

Take a resignation on Wednesday, 4 November 2026 with 30 days' notice. If the resignation day counts as day 1, the last working day is Thursday, 3 December 2026. If notice starts the next day, it is Friday, 4 December. One day sounds small, but it can change your final salary, your joining date at a new job and the number of leave days you can encash.

Some contracts count working days, which skips weekends. Twenty working days from 4 November 2026 ends on Tuesday, 1 December. Notice in months follows the calendar: two months from 4 November with that day counted ends on 3 January 2027.

If the last day falls on a weekend, most people finish on the Friday before, but the contract date is what HR will use for pay and relieving letters. Public holidays are not taken out here, so check your company's holiday list if you are counting working days.

Good to know

  • For months, the calendar month is moved first, then one day is taken off.
