A kitten grows up in a hurry. At six months it is roughly like a 10-year-old child, and by its first birthday it is about 15 in human terms. By two it is a young adult of about 24.
From then on the pace evens out to about 4 human years each year. A 10-year-old cat is about 56, and a 15-year-old about 76. That is why vets start talking about senior care from around 11.
Life stages help more than the exact number. Young adults, up to 6, need play and a weight check. Mature cats, 7 to 10, often start to slow down and put on weight. Seniors from 11 benefit from twice-yearly checks, blood tests and attention to teeth and kidneys.
Indoor cats, cats at a healthy weight and cats with regular vet care tend to live longest. If you do not know your cat's exact age, a vet can estimate it from teeth, eyes and coat.
