Decimal to fraction calculator

 —

A decimal is turned into the exact fraction of its digits and then simplified, so 0.375 is 375/1000 = 3/8. For rounded repeating decimals such as 0.3333, the nearest simple fraction with a denominator up to 100 is also shown.

Moving between decimals and fractions

Every terminating decimal is a fraction with 10, 100, 1,000 or another power of ten underneath. The work is in simplifying it. 0.375 has three decimal places, so it is 375/1000. Both numbers divide by 125, giving 3/8.

When the top is bigger than the bottom, you can also write a mixed number. 2.75 is 275/100 = 11/4, which is 2 whole and 3/4 left over, so 2 3/4.

Rounded repeating decimals need care. 0.3333 is exactly 3333/10000, but it is almost always a rounded 1/3. The tool shows both: the exact fraction of what you typed and the nearest simple fraction with a denominator up to 100.

Going the other way, divide the top by the bottom. Some fractions end, like 3/8 = 0.375. Others repeat for ever, because the remainders cycle. 1/7 gives 0.142857 then the same six digits again, written 0.(142857).

What this calculator does not account for

  • Nearest simple fraction uses denominators up to 100.
  • Repeating decimals show up to 60 digits.

How this is calculated

Formula: Decimal to fraction

fraction =digits ÷ 10^(decimal places), then divide top and bottom by their greatest common divisor

What the symbols mean

  • digitsThe decimal written without the point: 0.375 → 375.
  • 10^(places)1 followed by as many zeros as there are decimal places: 1,000.

Good to know

  • Fraction to decimal is long division; when a remainder repeats, the digits repeat.
  • To add or multiply fractions, use the fraction calculator.

Questions

How do I convert a decimal to a fraction?

Write the decimal over 1 followed by a zero for each decimal place, then simplify. 0.375 = 375/1000 = 3/8.

What is 2.75 as a fraction?

11/4, or 2 3/4 as a mixed number.

What is 0.3333 as a fraction?

Exactly, it is 3333/10000. If it is a rounded 0.333… then it is 1/3, which the tool shows as the nearest simple fraction.

What is 1/7 as a decimal?

0.142857142857…, written 0.(142857) because the six digits repeat forever.

How do I turn a fraction into a percentage?

Divide the top by the bottom and multiply by 100. 3/8 = 0.375 = 37.5%.
