Roman numerals still turn up on clock faces, film credits, book chapters, Super Bowl names and monarchs. There are only seven symbols: I (1), V (5), X (10), L (50), C (100), D (500) and M (1,000).
The easiest way to write a number is place by place. For 2026, write 2,000 as MM, 20 as XX and 6 as VI, then join them: MMXXVI. The table under the result shows this split for any number you enter.
Reading works the other way. Add the symbols from left to right, but when a smaller one comes before a larger one, subtract it. In MCMXCIV, M = 1,000, CM = 900, XC = 90 and IV = 4, so it is 1994.
Only six subtractive pairs are standard: IV, IX, XL, XC, CD and CM. That is why 99 is XCIX rather than IC, and why the converter rejects forms like IIII or VX.

Modern Roman numerals use subtraction to avoid four of the same symbol. Some clock faces still show IIII by tradition.
3,999 (MMMCMXCIX) in the standard form. Larger numbers used a bar over a symbol to multiply it by 1,000.
No. The Romans had no symbol for zero.
