Hourly to salary calculator

Pay is the same every week you work. A year is the weeks you enter, a month is a twelfth of the year, and a work day is a fifth of the week. Figures are before tax, overtime and bonuses.

Comparing an hourly job with a salaried one

Job ads mix hourly rates and yearly salaries, so comparing two offers often means converting one into the other. The rule of thumb is to double the hourly rate and add three zeros: $25 an hour is about $50,000. The exact figure for full time, 40 hours over 52 weeks, is $52,000.

The table breaks that into every pay period you are likely to see: $200 a day, $1,000 a week, $2,000 every two weeks, $2,166.67 twice a month and $4,333.33 a month. Biweekly and twice-monthly sound alike but are not; biweekly gives 26 paychecks a year and twice-monthly gives 24.

Two inputs change the answer the most. Hours: a 35-hour week at $25 is $45,500 a year, not $52,000. Paid weeks: if your holidays are unpaid, cut the weeks. The chart shows how yearly pay moves with hours at your rate, which helps when a part-time offer is on the table.

A salaried job may include paid leave, health cover and retirement matching that an hourly job does not. Those benefits can be worth 20% to 30% of pay, so compare the whole package, not only the headline number.

How this is calculated

Formula: Hourly rate to salary

yearly salary =hourly rate × hours a week × paid weeks a year

What the symbols mean

  • hours a weekUsually 40 for full time.
  • paid weeks a year52 if holidays are paid, fewer if unpaid leave is taken.

Good to know

  • Monthly pay is the yearly figure ÷ 12, not 4 weeks, because a month is about 4.33 weeks.
  • To go the other way, the tool divides the salary by the yearly hours.

Questions

How much is $25 an hour a year?

$52,000 for 40 hours a week over 52 weeks. That is $4,333.33 a month and $2,000 every two weeks, before tax.

How do I convert a salary to an hourly rate?

Divide the yearly salary by the hours you work in a year. Full time is 40 × 52 = 2,080 hours, so $52,000 a year is $25 an hour.

Why is monthly pay not four times weekly pay?

Because most months are longer than four weeks. A year has 52 weeks, so a month averages 52 ÷ 12 = 4.33 weeks.

Is this before or after tax?

Before. Federal and state income tax, Social Security and Medicare come out of these figures. Use the take-home pay calculator for a net estimate.

What if I take unpaid time off?

Lower the paid weeks a year. Two weeks of unpaid leave means 50 weeks, which turns $25 an hour into $50,000.
