How a typed meal becomes a calorie total

You type the plate the way you would say it: two rotis, dal tadka, and a banana. A short model call turns that into a list of names and amounts. It is told not to estimate energy or macros.

Each name is checked against a fixed table. A match is scaled by the unit. Two rotis are two times the 40 g roti row. One katori of dal tadka is the 150 g row. A banana is one medium fruit. The page then adds those rows.

A food that is not in the table, or an amount the table does not size, stays on the unmatched list. That is deliberate. A guessed calorie for an unknown dish would look precise and be made up.

The figures are typical rounded values for a home serving, drawn from USDA FoodData Central for common global foods and from the style of the ICMR-NIN Indian food tables for roti, dal, idli and similar plates. They are not a lab test of your cooking.

Sources

What this calculator does not account for

  • Oil, ghee and recipe differences that the table's typical serving does not match.
  • Foods that are not in the table. Those are listed and not given a guessed number.
  • Micronutrients, fibre and a lab test of your own plate.

How this is calculated

Formula: Add the looked-up foods

total =sum of table value × amount

What the symbols mean

  • foodA name in the on-page table, matched from the sentence.
  • amountA number and a unit the table knows, such as piece, katori, cup or grams.

Good to know

  • The model is not allowed to invent calories, protein, carbs or fat.
  • Set a daily target with the macro calculator.

Worked examples

Each example is worked out by the same code as the calculator above.

2 rotis, dal tadka, and a banana

Two rotis, one katori of dal tadka and one banana are each looked up and added. A side the table does not know is listed and left out of the total.

Questions

Does the AI calculate the calories?

No. It only picks the foods and amounts out of the sentence. The page multiplies those amounts by the table.

What if my food is missing?

It is listed under Not counted, and it adds nothing. The page does not guess a number for it.

How exact is a roti or a katori?

A roti is counted as 40 g and a katori of dal as 150 g. Your kitchen measure will differ, especially once you add oil or ghee.

Can I log a photo of the plate?

No. This page only reads the sentence you type.
